SatLeo Labs Readies TAPAS-1 Thermal Payload for October 1 Launch

Indian spacetech startup SatLeo Labs is preparing to launch TAPAS-1 on October 1,marking the first orbital test of its planned commercial thermal-intelligence platform. The CubeSat-category payload is scheduled to fly on Dhruva Space’s LEAP-2 platform aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 Falcon 9 mission. SatLeo describes TAPAS-1 as India’s first private dedicated commercial thermal payload, a claim that should be treated as the company’s positioning rather than an independently established industry designation.

TAPAS-1 — short for Thermal Access Platform for Analytics & Solutions — uses thermal infrared sensing to detect temperature patterns that ordinary visible-light imagery cannot capture. The upcoming mission is intended to validate the sensor, payload performance and data-processing capabilities in orbit before SatLeo moves toward a larger satellite network.

SatLeo’s own mission page lists the launch for October 1 at 23:48 IST. The company sees applications across urban heat mapping, agriculture, climate monitoring, disaster response and infrastructure inspection. SatLeo has already tested related thermal analytics on the ground: in Tumakuru, its work included landfill methane monitoring and heat-island mapping, while an Ahmedabad deployment produced heat forecaststhat the company said were accurate within 2–3°C and supported heat advisories for outdoor workers.

SatLeo says it has secured letters of intent worth more than $52 million for its thermal- intelligence services. LOIs indicate potential commercial interest rather than recognised revenue or guaranteed contracts. The company plans to follow TAPAS-1 with its PYRO missions and a broader thermal constellation designed to observe temperature changes across cities, farms and forests more frequently.

The larger opportunity lies in turning satellite imagery into temperature intelligence rather than simply pictures of the Earth. SatLeo says its planned platform will combine thermal sensing with AI and onboard edge computing to reduce processing delays and extract useful information closer to the source. The October mission is therefore primarily a technology-validation step;commercial scale will depend on TAPAS-1 performing as intended in orbit and the subsequent constellation being successfully deployed.
