Razorpay has enabled Apple Pay for domestic payments in India, allowing eligible merchants to accept payments across websites, apps and physical stores. The integration follows Apple Pay’s official India launch on September 30 and marks an expansion from Razorpay’s earlier support for Apple Pay on international transactions for Indian exporters.
At launch, Indian customers can add Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards to Apple Wallet and pay using iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, with Mac support due later. In physical stores, payments work through compatible contactless terminals, while online customers can authenticate purchases using Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode instead of repeatedly entering card details or waiting for an OTP.
For Razorpay merchants, Apple Pay can appear automatically for eligible customers using its Standard Checkout, Payment Links, Payment Pages and Shopify integrations. Businesses using more customised payment stacks can also integrate the payment method while Razorpay processes the transaction in the background. Razorpay says domestic Apple Pay payments can be accepted in INR.
The India rollout is still narrower than Apple Pay’s footprint in many international markets. UPIand RuPay are not supported at launch, meaning the initial addressable customer base is limited to eligible cardholders and supported Apple devices. Apple has also partnered with multiple payment-service providers, including Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, PineLabs, Razorpay and Worldline, so Razorpay is one part of a wider merchant rollout rather than an exclusive domestic partner.
For Razorpay, the strategic shift is from helping Indian businesses accept Apple Pay primarily from overseas customers to embedding it into domestic checkout. The commercial test will be whether reducing authentication and card-entry friction translates into meaningfully better conversion for Indian merchants, particularly while eligibility remains limited to a relatively narrow set of cards.
