The startup ecosystem thrives on one simple belief: every ending can become the beginning of something much bigger. Vishal Gupta's latest career move reflects exactly that.
After spending nearly a decade helping shape PhonePe's growth journey, Vishal Gupta has stepped down as the CEO of PhonePe Insurance Broking Services to start a new venture of his own. While details about the company remain under wraps, Gupta has confirmed that he is returning to what he enjoys the most building businesses from the ground up and solving difficult problems before scaling them.
Gupta joined PhonePe in 2016 and played an important role in expanding the company's product, design, and customer experience capabilities. In 2023, he was appointed CEO of PhonePe Insurance Broking Services, where he led the company's insurance business during a period when PhonePe was rapidly diversifying beyond digital payments into financial services such as insurance, lending and wealth management.
His departure also comes at a time when PhonePe has witnessed several senior leadership exits over the past few months, highlighting a broader trend of experienced operators choosing entrepreneurship after helping build large technology companies. PhonePe has not yet announced a successor for the insurance business.
Although Gupta's new startup is currently operating in stealth mode, his decision is likely to attract attention across the startup ecosystem. Founders with deep experience in scaling products, building teams and understanding Indian consumers often enter entrepreneurship with valuable insights that can lead to category-defining businesses.
For India's startup landscape, this is more than just an executive transition. It is another reminder that some of the country's next-generation startups may be founded by leaders who have already helped build today's unicorns. The market will now be watching closely to see what Vishal Gupta builds next.
