OpenAI Reportedly Buys Glass Imaging for Over  $300 Mn

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a startup developing AI-powered camera technology for smartphones, in a deal valuing the company at more than $300 million. The acquisition was completed quietly in recent months, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal. OpenAI and Glass Imaging have not publicly detailed the transaction.

Founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, Glass Imaging is trying to overcome the physical limitations of increasingly compact smartphone cameras. The founders previously worked on Apple’s computational photography efforts, including technology behind the iPhone’s Portrait Mode. The Los Altos-based startup had raised roughly $30 million before the deal and was valued at around $100 million in a funding round last year.

Its core technology, GlassAI, differs from conventional AI photo editing. Instead of generating or enhancing an image after capture, the company trains neural networks around the characteristics of individual camera systems, using raw sensor information to correct optical imperfections, reduce noise and recover finer detail as the picture is taken. Glass Imaging says its goal is to deliver DSLR-like image quality from compact cameras.

The technology has already moved beyond laboratory development. Glass Imaging’s zoom- imaging work has been used in smartphones from Chinese handset maker Honor, while the company has also discussed potential applications across wearables, drones and other small- camera devices.

OpenAI has not disclosed how it plans to use Glass Imaging, but the acquisition adds specialised camera expertise as the company pushes deeper into consumer hardware. OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s hardware startup io Products for $6.5 billion in 2025 and is developing a broader family of AI devices. Bringing advanced computational imaging in-house could make cameras and visual perception a more important part of that hardware strategy.
