OpenAI has expanded access to its latest GPT-5.6 Luna model for ChatGPT's Free and Go users, introducing unlimited text conversations while updating GPT-5.6 Sol with improved reasoning controls for Plus and Pro subscribers, the company announced.

The update marks one of OpenAI's biggest consumer-facing rollouts this year, bringing its latest AI capabilities to millions of free users while simplifying how paid subscribers access advanced reasoning. The changes come as competition intensifies among AI companies seeking to attract and retain users with more capable and affordable models.

GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing previous text-chat limitations with unlimited text conversations. OpenAI is also introducing a new "Think" button that allows Luna to spend additional time reasoning through complex prompts before generating a response. Limits on image generation, file uploads and certain advanced tools will remain in place.

For ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, OpenAI has upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol to deliver more accurate and concise responses, particularly for prompts involving dates, numbers, rules and source-based queries. The company is also replacing separate reasoning modes with a new reasoning-depth slider, allowing users to control how much computation the model applies to each request.

According to OpenAI, the updated GPT-5.6 Sol is designed to provide more focused answers while reducing unnecessary formatting and improving factual reliability. The company said the rollout is beginning immediately and will reach eligible users in phases over the coming days.

The announcement reflects OpenAI's strategy of making advanced AI capabilities more broadly available while reserving additional controls and higher-performance reasoning features for paid subscribers. It also simplifies the ChatGPT experience by reducing the need for users to switch between multiple models for different tasks.

OpenAI said GPT-5.6 availability will continue to expand gradually across supported ChatGPT plans and regions as the rollout progresses.
