Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his memorial Sadaiv Atal in New Delhi on Sunday, marking Vajpayee’s death anniversary.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and other senior leaders also paid their respects at the memorial. The Prime Minister’s Office and the Press Information Bureau documented the tributes at Sadaiv Atal on August 16.
Vajpayee died on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93. The former prime minister served three times in office, first briefly in 1996 and later from 1998 to 1999 and from 1999 to 2004.
A poet, parliamentarian and BJP leader, Vajpayee remained one of the most prominent political figures of his generation. His political career spanned several decades and included a period of coalition government at the Centre.
Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2015. Government publications have described his contribution to governance, infrastructure, economic policy and national security as part of his political legacy.
His tenure also included major policy and strategic developments. Government publications have highlighted initiatives including the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and changes in telecommunications policy during his years as prime minister.
Vajpayee was also known for his Hindi poetry and parliamentary speeches. His ability to engage with political opponents helped establish his reputation as a parliamentarian who was respected beyond his party, although assessments of his political legacy continue to differ across political lines.
The annual remembrance at Sadaiv Atal has become a regular occasion for senior political leaders to pay tribute to the former prime minister. The 2026 ceremony again brought together the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and senior political figures.
The tribute came a day after India observed its 80th Independence Day, adding the remembrance ceremony to a week of official events in New Delhi. The government has continued to commemorate Vajpayee’s contribution to public life through memorial and heritage programmes.
Vajpayee’s legacy remains associated with coalition-era governance, parliamentary politics, national security and economic policy. His death anniversary is observed each year on August 16 at Sadaiv Atal in New Delhi.
