Jagruti Rehabilitation Centre spent nearly two decades building its mental healthcare network largely without institutional capital. Now the Pune-based provider has raised ₹28 crore in Series A funding, giving it fresh capital to more than double its residential-care footprint over the next three to four years.
The round was led by Alkemi Growth Capital and marks Jagruti’s first institutional fundraise. The money will be used to enter new cities, add doctors and clinical staff, develop specialised care programmes and deepen partnerships with insurers and corporate organisations.
Founded in Pune in 2008 by psychiatrist Dr Amar Shinde and Vijaya Shinde, Jagruti began with a 10-bed facility. Hemant Shinde joined as cofounder and CEO in 2019, when the organisation had just two centres, and helped build it into a professionally managed healthcare network.
Today, Jagruti says it operates 19+ centres across nine cities, with more than 1,600 beds and 40 doctors. Its programmes span residential mental healthcare, addiction and substance-use treatment, dementia and neurological care. The organisation says it has supported more than 82,000 individuals so far.
Its next target is significantly larger: 40+ centres and more than 4,000 beds across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities within three to four years. That means expanding not only physical capacity but also the clinical teams, caregivers and operating standards required to provide consistent care across locations.
For Alkemi, the investment is its first in mental health and rehabilitation within healthcare delivery. The larger opportunity lies in bringing greater organisation and clinical standardisation to a sector still dominated by standalone facilities and smaller independent providers.
For Jagruti, scaling beds may be the easiest number to measure. The harder test will be preserving the quality, dignity and psychiatrist-led approach of its existing centres as the network moves from roughly 1,600 beds toward 4,000.
