As AI-generated deepfakes increasingly chip away at trust across banking, government services, and online platforms, one Indian startup just picked up serious validation on a global stage. Neural Defend, which builds real-time deepfake detection technology, has won the Everything AI Startup Pitch Competition at New York Tech Week one of the biggest tech gatherings in the US hosted by venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
The Only Indian Startup in the Finals
Neural Defend was the sole Indian company among ten global finalists, and it walked away with first place plus roughly $50,000 in equity-free prize money. The win came after its deepfake detection technology impressed a judging panel stacked with heavyweight names, including Derek Canton (Startup Director at OpenAI), Amrita Sankar (North America Head of GenAI Startup GTM at AWS), and investors from FirstMark, Amazon's Alexa Fund, IBM, Geek Ventures, and the Techstars network.
Why This Matters Right Now
The timing is notable. As generative AI tools become more accessible, deepfakes are moving well beyond misinformation they're increasingly being weaponised for financial fraud, identity theft, and cybercrime. That shift is pushing governments, regulators, and enterprises worldwide to shore up their defences, with AI-driven authenticity verification becoming a critical piece of the puzzle for protecting digital identity, financial systems, and online transactions.
For India specifically, the stakes are high. The country runs more than 150 million eKYC verifications annually and processes billions of UPI transactions every month, making secure remote identity verification a backbone of its digital economy. In June 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs acting through the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) issued an advisory urging banks and fintechs to adopt stronger deepfake detection tools, warning that fraudsters were already using synthetic media to slip past facial authentication, liveness checks, Video-KYC, and account recovery systems.
That advisory followed changes to the Information Technology Rules in February 2026, which tightened obligations around detecting and labelling AI-generated content and shortened the timelines for taking such content down another sign of how seriously the country is treating the issue.
What the Founder and Judges Had to Say
Neural Defend co-founder and CEO Piyush Verma called the win a validation of the company's broader mission. He said the recognition reinforces the idea that breakthrough AI technology can be built and scaled from India for a global audience, and pointed to the moment as part of a larger shift toward real-time authenticity verification becoming standard practice across digital ecosystems.
Judge Katerina Andreeva, an AI strategy advisor and former IBM executive, said what stood out about Neural Defend was its direct focus on a question more organisations are starting to ask how to confirm something is real before acting on it. Alexander Zemlyak, a partner at Geek Ventures who also judged the competition, described the overall quality of the startups as unusually strong, adding that this was one of the few times he'd followed up with most of the founders after judging an event.
What Neural Defend Actually Builds
Rather than building an application layer on top of someone else's AI model, Neural Defend has developed its own foundational technology purpose-built for deepfake detection. Its patent-pending detection model is designed to flag AI-generated manipulation across video, images, audio, and live streams in under a second.
That technology is already live with several global financial institutions, including Tier-1 banks, where it's processing millions of detections a month to support customer onboarding, identity verification, and fraud prevention.
