India had 138 startups valued at $1 billion or more as of August 6, according to Tracxn data, with Emergent becoming the latest company to join the country's unicorn club.
Emergent became a unicorn on July 15 after raising $130 million in a Series C funding round that valued the AI coding startup at $1.5 billion. The round was led by Creaegis, with participation from MNI Ventures-Claypond, Sentinel Global and existing investors including Khosla Ventures, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Lightspeed and Y Combinator.
The startup's latest funding took its total capital raised to $230 million, while its annualised revenue run rate reached $120 million, according to TechCrunch. Emergent said it had more than 200,000 paying customers and was targeting entrepreneurs and small businesses that need software but may not have dedicated engineering teams.
The 2026 unicorn cohort has also reflected growing investor interest in technology and infrastructure businesses. A separate tracker published in June listed seven Indian startups entering the unicorn club during 2026, including Juspay, Skyroot Aerospace, Sarvam and Emergent.
Skyroot became India's first space-tech unicorn in May after raising $60 million in a funding round that valued the Hyderabad-based company at more than $1 billion, according to NDTV. The company was preparing for its Vikram-1 orbital launch as it expanded its commercial space programme.
The overall unicorn count differs across databases because providers use different definitions, inclusion rules and update schedules. Inc42, for example, reported 132 Indian unicorns in July, compared with the 138 listed by the Tracxn source provided for this report.
Tracxn's August list showed the latest additions across sectors including AI, real estate, space technology, financial services and consumer businesses. Emergent, Square Yards, Sarvam, Skyroot, KreditBee, Nexthop AI and Neysa were among the companies appearing at the top of the updated list.
The concentration of unicorns remained strongest in India's major startup centres. The Tracxn data provided for this report placed Bengaluru first with 58 unicorns, followed by Gurugram and Mumbai with 23 each.
Consumer businesses accounted for the largest number of unicorns by sector in the same dataset, with 60 companies, followed by enterprise applications with 44 and retail with 39. The figures reflect the cumulative unicorn base rather than the number of companies created in 2026.
India ranked third globally by total unicorns in the supplied Tracxn data, behind the United States and China. The database counted 1,227 unicorns in the US and 248 in China, compared with 138 in India.
The latest additions point to a startup market that is producing billion-dollar companies across a broader range of sectors rather than relying only on consumer internet businesses. The next additions will depend on new funding rounds and valuation events that take individual companies above the $1 billion threshold.
