India's food delivery industry has never been short of bold ideas, but surviving in it has become far more difficult than launching in it. As competition intensifies and operating costs rise, even some of the country's earliest cloud kitchen success stories are searching for a second chance.
That opportunity may now come through Dil Foods, which is in discussions to acquire cloud kitchen pioneer FreshMenu. While the transaction has not been finalised, the two companies have already entered into a brand licensing and operating arrangement that has restarted FreshMenu operations at select locations.
FreshMenu was among the first startups to popularise the cloud kitchen model in India, building a loyal customer base with chef-curated meals delivered directly from delivery-only kitchens. Over the years, however, rising competition, changing consumer behaviour and financial pressures made the business increasingly challenging. Recent cash flow constraints eventually forced the company to suspend operations across the country.
For Dil Foods, the potential deal represents more than an acquisition. Founded in 2022, the company has built a restaurant enablement platform that partners with local kitchens instead of investing heavily in its own infrastructure. Its portfolio of regional food brands operates across hundreds of locations, allowing restaurants to generate additional revenue through delivery-first brands.
Bringing FreshMenu into this ecosystem could give Dil Foods a recognised consumer brand while offering FreshMenu access to an established operational network, supply chain and technology platform.
The discussions also reflect a broader shift taking place across India's foodtech ecosystem. Growth is no longer driven only by launching new brands; increasingly, it is about rebuilding proven ones with stronger operating models and better capital efficiency.
If the acquisition moves forward, it could mark a fresh beginning for one of India's earliest cloud kitchen pioneers while strengthening Dil Foods' ambitions of becoming a larger force in the country's rapidly evolving food delivery market.
