Markets have a funny way of reacting before a single delivery bag even hits the road. The moment word got out that Flipkart was stepping into food delivery, shares of Zomato and Swiggy dropped 3% and 5% respectively, a reaction that says more about investor nerves than anything Flipkart has actually built yet.

Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy confirmed the move in an interview, saying the Walmart-owned company will launch food delivery within the next few weeks as a pilot, folding it in as another use case inside its main shopping app while also testing a separate, standalone app on the side. Sources indicate the service will lean heavily on the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce, and the first sizable rollout is expected in Bengaluru, a city where expectations around anything wearing the Flipkart name tend to run high.

Krishnamurthy has been clear that this is not a price war in disguise. Rather than undercutting rivals on cost, Flipkart says its pitch will center on a wider restaurant selection, more dependable delivery, and a smoother overall experience, with plans to scale nationally once the pilot proves itself.

The timing is not exactly quiet. Rapido has been testing Ownly, a zero-commission food platform aimed at easing steep restaurant commissions, while Swiggy recently rolled out Toing for budget-focused customers. Into that mix now steps a company with hundreds of millions of existing users already buying everything from phones to sarees on its platform, a very different starting point from a startup chasing its first big win.

For Flipkart, this fits a familiar pattern. The company has moved from books to electronics to fashion to travel over the years, and more recently into quick commerce with Flipkart Minutes, which had scaled to 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres across more than 130 cities by mid-2026. Food delivery is simply the next logical stop on that expansion map, whether Zomato and Swiggy are ready for it or not.
