Uber India & South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh has stepped down after nearly 11 years and is set to join OpenAI as its India Managing Director, marking a major leadership shift in India's tech ecosystem.

After spending nearly 11 years building Uber's business across India and South Asia, Singh has stepped down as President of the ride-hailing giant. He is now set to join OpenAI as its Managing Director for India, becoming the company's senior-most executive in one of its fastest-growing global markets. He will assume the role in September and report to Kiran Mani, OpenAI's Managing Director for Asia Pacific.
Singh joined Uber in 2015 as General Manager and Head of Strategy before taking over as President for India and South Asia in 2020. During his tenure, he played a key role in expanding Uber's presence across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, while helping scale offerings such as Auto, Moto and Shuttle. The company also accelerated its electric mobility initiatives and partnered with digital public infrastructure platforms like ONDC under his leadership.
At OpenAI, Singh's responsibilities will extend beyond business growth. He will oversee consumer expansion, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall operations in India. A key part of his mandate will also be strengthening relationships across India's AI ecosystem and helping businesses, institutions and government bodies adopt artificial intelligence more effectively.
The appointment comes at a time when India has become one of OpenAI's most important growth markets. With generative AI adoption accelerating across startups, enterprises and developers, the company has been steadily expanding its leadership team and local presence to support long-term growth.
