A viral Reddit post has sparked debate over how companies communicate mass layoffs after an employee claimed an entire 80-member Indian customer service team working for a US financial firm was dismissed during a five-minute Google Meet call. Hindustan Times reported the account while noting that the claims have not been independently verified.

According to the employee, the team had been asked to work from home for what were described as operational reasons. During an evening shift, employees reportedly received an unexpected meeting invitation at around 9:30 PM. The worker said they were then informed that the entire India customer service unit was being terminated.

The employee claimed management cited lower-than-expected output from the India team as the reason for the decision, an explanation they disputed in subsequent comments. The post also raised questions around severance: the worker said newer employees would receive no severance, while those who had completed a year would receive roughly 15 days of pay for each year worked. These details remain claims from the affected employee rather than independently confirmed company disclosures.

In a separate discussion of the same experience, the employee also claimed AI adoption had reduced support call volumes and that some remaining customer-service work could move to a third-party provider. Those statements have likewise not been independently verified, and the employer has not publicly confirmed that automation caused the layoffs.

The story has resonated because it highlights a broader tension around remote work and mass restructuring: companies can now inform large distributed teams almost instantly, but the speed of communication can make an already difficult decision feel unusually impersonal. With the employer’s account currently absent, the exact circumstances remain unclear. What is evident is that the alleged five-minute call has renewed discussion around transparency, severance and how companies should handle large-scale workforce reductions.
