Truecaller is taking its fraud-detection capabilities beyond caller ID with the launch of Scam Checker, a free web and Android service that lets users check suspicious phone numbers, links and messages without downloading the Truecaller app or signing in. The service has initially launched in India, with expansion planned across Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia.

For suspicious links, Scam Checker follows redirects to the final destination and evaluates the URL against Truecaller’s proprietary risk database, community fraud reports and other signals. Users can also paste suspicious messages, allowing the tool to identify embedded phone numbers or links and surface related scam reports. More detailed caller information, including the name associated with a number, remains part of Truecaller’s signed-in service.

The product reflects how fraud has shifted beyond voice calls. A 2025 GSMA survey cited by TechCrunch found that among Indian adults who reported being scammed, 46% encountered the scam through messaging apps, 37% through SMS and 32% through voice calls.

Truecaller also estimates that users conduct roughly 14 million web searches every month to verify suspicious links and phone numbers.

Community data is central to the strategy. Truecaller told TechCrunch that ScamFeed currently contains about 20,000 live scam reports in India, with roughly 1,300 new reports being added each week. Between September 14 and 20, the company said it evaluated 12.9 billion messages globally and flagged 20.3 million as fraudulent. Screenshot analysis is among the capabilities planned for Scam Checker next.

The launch also broadens Truecaller’s position as its traditional caller-ID business faces changing competition. India is rolling out telecom-led caller-name presentation, while Apple and Google have expanded their own identification and spam-protection tools. Truecaller still serves more than 500 million users globally and over 350 million in India, but Scam Checker suggests its next growth layer could increasingly centre on cross-channel scam intelligence spanning calls, messages and the web rather than caller identification alone.
