Starbucks Picks Chennai for First India Tech Hub, Plans 800 Hires

Starbucks is setting up its first global capability centre in India in Chennai, with the facility expected to create around 800 technology jobs in its initial phase. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government for the project, adding another major global brand to India’s rapidly expanding GCC ecosystem.

Starbucks describes the facility as a Technology Hub and says it will become part of its broader global technology network alongside teams in Seattle, Nashville, London and Hong Kong. The Chennai operation will support Starbucks’ global business and work closely with technology and business teams across the company rather than functioning as a standalone offshore unit.

The company also plans to gradually bring some work currently handled by third-party technology service providers in-house. Starbucks CTO Anand Varadarajan said Chennai was selected for factors including its deep technology talent pool, relatively strong talent retention and ability to support the company’s long-term requirements. Local recruitment is expected to begin in Q1 of Starbucks’ FY27 planning cycle as office preparations progres Importantly, the technology hub will operate separately from Starbucks’ Indian retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products.

The retail partnership operates the company’s coffeehouse business in India, while the Chennai centre will focus on Starbucks’ wider global technology organisation and digital capabilities.

The move reflects the broader evolution of India’s GCC market from back-office support toward higher-value technology, engineering and business functions. YourStory reports that India now hosts more than 2,100 GCCs employing around 2.3 million professionals, up from roughly 1,600 centres five years ago. For Starbucks, the Chennai hub represents more than an India expansion—it is part of a wider effort to build more technology capability directly inside the company while supporting its coffeehouses, employees and customers globally.
